Heya,
I am obviously biased, but may I suggest CouchDB for prototyping as well? It is dead easy to get started with and CouchDB runs fine on EC2. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

ElasticHosts

Paul,

Sounds like an interesting solution - I like the way that you use a combination of a long-lived AMI for continuous web hosting and ad-hoc AMIs for processing.

However, for those users who are looking for cloud infrastructure primarily for web hosting, I wouldn't recommend Amazon EC2. There are a good range of vendors offering more tailored web hosting solutions in the cloud - e.g. MediaTemple, GoGrid and Mosso in the US or ElasticHosts (ourselves) and FlexiScale in the UK. These services typically offer a number of advantages, such as accompanying services (domain registration, e-mail forwarding) and improved platform for continuous operations (e.g. persistent hard disk over reboots, unlike EC2).

Cheers,

Richard.
